How We Started
From its humble beginning in 1992 until today, SCWBA's Student Build program has been providing a hands-on classroom experience, exposing area students to the skilled trades. The program has grown tremendously throughout the years, launching first as a home rehab model, growing to a partnership with Habitat for Humanity, and ultimately leading to the custom spec full home build project you see today. Our current model allows students to build an entire quality custom spec home from start to finish in one academic school year. The program is fully self sustaining thanks to our many members and partners who work with us each year. During the build year students meet and work with licensed professionals from every home building trade. Students are often times offered employment opportunities through the connections made in the program. The program is all encompassing, complete pathway oriented, and highly successful.
Who We Serve
Our program has partnered with School District of Janesville since inception, and continues to be one of the areas most recognized trades education programs for high school juniors and seniors. SCWBA now partners with additional regional school districts to develop additional student trades programs offering even more students building trades exposure and hands on learning opportunities. Throughout Wisconsin our Student Build Program is well respected and inspirational to other regions looking to provide similar programming.
How the Program is Funded
Each year the completed home is listed on the market for sale at market value. Proceeds from the sale fund the next year's program. Each year's program budget includes funds earmarked for the build year's expenses including; lot, site clearing, construction setup, utilities access, materials, construction costs, permits, insurance, skilled labor supervision, tools, equipment, student garments, safety gear, home and lawn maintenance, support labor, and supervision. Proceeds above the project budget are awarded in trades scholarships to graduating students in Rock and Green Counties.
Student Financial Support
Since 2007, the program has provided numerous scholarships to participants that are looking to make the construction industry their chosen profession. We provide both academic and direct to workforce scholarships to high school seniors planning to pursue trades careers via education pathways and/or direct to the labor force commitments.. From 2023-2026 SCWBA awarded $36,000 in trades scholarship commitments to graduating seniors. Scholarships are awarded for education, workforce incentives, tools, equipment, garments, or other expenses related to the student's future in the building industry. SCWBA is proud to be a part of training and providing financial support to future builders and trades professionals in our local home building industry
