South Central Wisconsin Builders Association (SCWBA) is one of more than 700 Home Builders Associations under the National Association of Home Builders' (NAHB) Umbrella. SCWBA's three tier structure provides valuable benefits and advocacy for home building professionals; locally, statewide, and nationally. With high level leaders, experts, advocates, lobbyists, and partners working together, our industry is well represented. SCWBA advocacy reaches to even the highest government leaders. As issues impacting the housing industry surface, leaders come together to quickly and effectively gather perspectives, data, and resources in order to protect and strengthen the building industry and the communities we serve.
President Trump recently announced a plan, to impose 25% tariffs on imported goods from Canada and Mexico. Advocates from every level, including SCWBA leadership, have delivered a consistent message of concern about the negative effect tariffs will have on housing affordability. In response, NAHB has urged the president to make building materials exempt from imposed tariffs, in order to keep the costs associated with construction from rising. SCWBA and affiliate partners across the country want to prevent home prices from skyrocketing even higher for consumers. One of President Trump's executive orders issued upon inauguration seeks to increase housing supply and affordability. However, significant concerns have been raised and shared with the president about the opposing impact tariffs, particularly on lumber and other building materials, would have on the goals which the executive order is intended for. NAHB leaders urged "a coordinated effort to remove obstacles to construction, be they regulatory, labor or supply-chain related." Further stating, "NAHB stands ready to work with you to accomplish these goals. However, we have serious concerns that proposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico will have the opposite effect, by slowing down the domestic residential construction industry." SCWBA invites businesses, leaders, and community partners to join in the conversation by getting involved with SCWBA's advocacy efforts. Whether joining our three tier membership network brings you to these conversations, or you invite us to have a seat at your table, we are here to work with, and advocate for; you, the local housing industry, and the economic health of our south central Wisconsin communities. We encourage you to reach out to SCWBA's Executive Officer, Heidi Van Kirk, to continue the conversation, and invite you to collaborate with us as we continue to strive for sustainable solutions to housing issues.
